Clark Creek Lodge was built in 1921
to accommodate workers on the Pit River Power Project. Approximately 270 people
lived in the Clark Creek area until its completion.
Clark Creek was known for its "boot-leg whiskey" produced throughout the hills
and shipped to the bay area during prohibition. Notables such as Al Capone were
known to drop in for an occasional inspection. After prohibition,
Clark Creek Lodge was a "hideout" for
some, a favorite "hangout" for others. Boxer Jack Dempsey did some training in a
special ring at Clark Creek Lodge.
President Harding met with William Randolph Hearst at
Clark Creek Lodge. Jean Harlow, Betty Davis along with a host
of other notables, came to Clark Creek Lodge.
Bing Crosby and Phil Harris claimed
Clark Creek Lodge to be their
"favorite place". Clint Eastwood has been known to drop by for dinner when
enjoying his Northern California ranch, just a short distance away.
